Mohs Patient Guide

Patient Instructions for Mohs Surgery

Now that you are scheduled for your Mohs procedure, this sheet will help you prepare for your day of surgery.

  • The best preparation for surgery is a good night’s rest followed by a good breakfast.
  • Please shower and shampoo your hair 24 hours before your procedure. This will minimize the bacterial growth on your skin and prevent infection.
  • Since you can expect to be here for most of the day, it is wise to bring a book or magazine to read. We also recommend bringing a lunch with you.
  • Because the day may prove to be quite tiring, it is advisable to have someone available on the day of surgery to provide you a ride home if necessary.
  • No Alcohol 48 hours prior to surgery
  • All normal medications should be taken. Please bring a supply with you on the day of surgery.
  • You must be in town for 1 to 2 weeks after surgery for follow up visits and suture removal.
  • You will need to keep the area treated covered with a bandage for 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the site.
  • No exercise or heavy lifting will be permitted the entire time sutures are in (includes running, yoga, golf, etc).

Please contact our office with any questions you may have prior to your Mohs surgery.

Sun exposure is the most preventable risk factor for all skin cancers. We recommend applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen everyday to help prevent skin cancer, wrinkling hyperpigmentation and loss of elasticity.
