Eczema

What is Eczema?

Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition characterized by dry itchy areas of skin. It can occur on any areas of the body but the most common areas include:

  • face
  • creases of the elbows
  • knees

Eczema is most common in babies and young children but can continue into adulthood.

What causes Eczema?

Eczema is thought to be due to a combination of genetics and environmental influences. Harsh soaps and detergents, fragrances and cold weather can all make eczema worse.

What are some over-the-counter ways to treat Eczema?

Mild eczema can be treated by avoiding harsh soaps and detergents and using a good moisturizing cream. Look for laundry detergents that are labeled “Free” and soaps that are fragrance free. Good moisturizing creams for eczema should contain ceramides. Apply a liberal amount of a ceramide containing moisturizer to all affected areas after showering.

What are some prescription treatments for Eczema?

Often, prescription medications are required to manage eczema. Most of the time eczema can be managed with topical medications, but occasionally oral medications are required. A dermatologist can help you determine the right medications for your eczema.
