Instant and long-lasting wrinkle correction.
Restylane® is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. As cosmetic trends move away from aggressive, drastic surgery to minimally invasive techniques such as Botox®, laser, intense pulse light therapy and microdermabrasion, Restylane® injections are fast becoming a popular way to achieve cosmetic improvement and rejuvenation. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Restylane® in January 2004.
What is Restylane® made of?Restylane® is the commercial name for a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid, a liquid substance made naturally by the skin and joints. Because Restylane® contains no animal protein or other chemicals, allergic reactions are extremely rare.
Restylane® is injected into wrinkles around the mouth (on the upper and lower lips), smile lines (between the upper lip and cheek), and into the lips themselves to make them appear fuller and more youthful. Restylane® is often used in combination with Botox® for superior cosmetic improvement of forehead wrinkles.
Restylane® can be injected easily in a physician’s office with minimal discomfort. Ultra-fine needles and the use of local and topical anesthesia make the process comfortable for patients. Post-therapy pain is usually not a problem. Following therapy, patients may leave the office without assistance and go about their day normally. Follow-up care is usually unnecessary.
Unlike collagen, which lasts approximately four months, the effects of Restylane® have been reported to last up to one year for wrinkle treatments and up to six months for lip enhancement.
The physicians at Dermatology Specialists, PA consider Restylane® to be very safe. Serious side effects are very uncommon. Some people experience minimal swelling of the skin following therapy that can be controlled with ice compresses. Temporary, minor bruising can occur. To minimize this, patients are encouraged to avoid blood-thinning medications like aspirin and high doses of vitamin E if medically possible. One reported rare side effect is temporary “beading” or bump-like skin changes following therapy. In theory, there is a risk of accidental injection into a blood vessel under the skin. Fortunately, good technique makes these risks very low, as reported by European, Canadian and U.S. physicians. Dermatology Specialists, P.A. staff have received special training in state-of-the-art Restylane® techniques and are very excited about this therapy.
Each individual is unique. Your dermatologist can discuss Restylane® and other cosmetic procedures in detail to help determine the most appropriate and effective therapy techniques for you.
